What to expect in your Nutrition Counseling Session:

All clients start with a nutrition assessment which begins with your first appointment. Before your first appointment, we ask you to complete food logs and a health survey. In our first appointment we get to know each other and the dietitian learns about your diet, your life, your health, and your personal goals for nutrition counseling. Our counseling style is informal and relaxed, but thorough. We are trained clinicians committed to learning about your life and looking at your nutrition status and health from a holistic view.

What is Nutrition Assessment?

The goal of the nutrition assessment is to determine a personalized diet and health plan that is in line with your goals and optimizes your health. During the assessment we will gather information about you such as: diet history, eating habits, food intolerances, food preferences, health symptoms, lifestyle, medical history, lab tests, exercise and daily activities, family history, and relationships. The assessment will also result in a nutrition diagnosis that includes an evaluation of your nutrition status, deficiencies, and nutrient needs.

In your Nutrition Assessment we use a Functional Medicine approach. We gather information to find the root cause of your health problem . Our philosophy is: the body works to maintain optimal health. To heal, conditions that promote healing must be present. Lifestyle practices that promote physical, medical, nutrition, and emotional health are essential.

Medical Insurance: To determine if you are eligible for insurance reimbursement, you need to call your insurance company. Insurance companies vary, some cover the cost of nutrition counseling, however many do not. Your first step is to call your insurance company and ask if they pay for “medical nutrition therapy” for your particular situation. A letter from your doctor referring you to a dietitian, with your stated diagnosis, may help obtain coverage. If you determine that you are eligible for reimbursement, we can help provide paperwork you need to submit a claim, but you will be responsible for paying Sustainable Diets directly.
