What is Nutrition Assessment?

Nutrition assessment is a process that a trained and experienced clinician uses to evaluate your nutrition status (from deficient to optimal); to detect nutrition and health problems; to evaluate your unique nutrition needs; and to provide a “nutrition diagnosis”. In order to perform an accurate nutrition diagnosis the clinician must have experience and training in biochemistry, nutrient metabolism, physiology, clinical nutrition, and other basic and advanced nutrition sciences. It is the first step to solving any nutrition-related health problem or to determine your individual nutrition needs for optimal health. It includes a thorough history (diet, lifestyle, medical, etc.) and evaluation of your nutrition status, calorie, protein and nutrient needs, adequacy of your diet, possible deficiencies or food intolerance(s), need for further testing, recommendations for diet and lifestyle changes and supplements.
